For caregivers and families

Helping a loved one? Start with a conversation.

There can be a lot to weigh up when you’re helping someone with a change at home. We’ll help you compare the options, with your loved one’s wishes guiding the conversation.

Start with what the homeowner wants to keep.

Ask about familiar routines before comparing products. Is taking a bath important? Does everyone who uses the room agree on the change? The homeowner’s preferences belong at the center of the decision.

Helping from out of town? Start with a shared list of questions. Ask your loved one who they’d like to receive the report and join the next conversation.

Make everyday use part of the discussion.

A spouse or day-to-day helper may notice details that a remote researcher cannot: where supplies sit, how the door opens, and how much working space is around the tub. Record questions about the room without storing private care information on this website.

If the discussion involves physical assistance or transfers, ask an occupational therapist or another appropriate clinician to clarify those needs. A lower tub wall alone does not answer that question.

Bring the same comparison to the table.

The project

Decide whether the goal is a lower tub opening, a replacement fixture, or a different bathing area.

Compare project scopes

The package

Compare the insert and accessories line by line. Keep the proposed total and any separate work together.

Compare package inclusions

The recommendation

Ask for the measured observations and an explanation of why a modification does—or does not—fit.

Understand the report

Bathroom decision checklist.

Print this page using the browser’s Print command. Mark this checklist on paper; nothing is entered or saved here.

  • Bathing preferences discussed with the homeowner.
  • Everyone who uses the room has had a chance to raise a question.
  • Current tub condition and the intended change reviewed during the assessment.
  • Expected finished opening and any remaining threshold explained.
  • Need for a convertible insert discussed.
  • Grab-bar, shower, floor-treatment, and seat options compared with the actual room.
  • Any care or transfer questions taken to the appropriate clinician.
  • Written scope, final total, payment timing, and warranty terms received.
  • Installation date and return-to-use instructions confirmed separately.
  • Any funding questions answered directly by the program before relying on assistance.
  • Homeowner has the report and decides who may receive a copy.
  • Alternatives discussed if modifying the tub is not the right answer.

Keep together: the observations, the written recommendation, the proposal, and any unanswered questions.

If a tub modification isn’t the answer, we’ll explain why.

We’ll explain what about the setup changes our recommendation and whether a smaller improvement is worth considering. You can keep that explanation with the report, ready for the next conversation with family or another professional.
